On Saturday April 2, AMA Supercross racing came to town and gave the crowd of over 51,000 at Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium in Arlington. The show provided enough awe and excitement as a trip to Six Flags. The race had two divisions, Supercross and Lites, both classes had as many turns of events as there were turns on the track.
All drivers not only brought quite a show with their gravity defying moves, jumps, and competitive spirits, a few brought some remnants of injuries from previous races. Texas boy Blake Wharton, #21, (Lites class) has been dealing with shoulder injuries and, “Will be taking a few months off after the season to have surgery, I have to do it,” Wharton said.
Another top contender was Ryan Villopoto, #2 who won at seven AMA races in 2010 and later last year broke his right leg which led to two major surgeries and plenty of physical rehabilitation. But, in spite of many of the racers previous and current physical conditions, their performances were amazingly mind blowing. From jumping over seriously high, gravity defying dirt jumps, to racing with up to 20 other competitor’s on the Stadium’s field the fast moving, event always had a lot going on at once.
One side of the course featured tight jumps that went straight from catching 10 plus feet of air to harrowing tight turns. While other parts of the course had longer spaces in between the jumps, ‘off road’ type terrain and multiple track obstacles. Throughout the event there were a few drivers who crashed, collided or lost control of their bikes. Some got right back on, while others had to be escorted off the field. At least one was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. (As of now it has yet to be confirmed if the injured racer was #10, Justin Brayton), who had a serious incident during the fifth lap of the finale/Main Event. Before the Arlington race, Brayton was listed as eighth in season standings for his class.
During the evening, television and Supercross Superstar James Stewart, #7 ran into an obstacle of his own with Chad Reed, #22 the bike altercation knocked Stewart off but didn’t knock him down because he went on to win fourth place against Ryan Dungey who won third, Ryan Villopoto who came in second and Trey Canard, #41 who took first place in the Supercross class.
The Lites class winners were Dean Wilson #15 who won first place, Justin Barcia, #17 who took second and hometown hero Blake Wharton, #21 who came in third. The crowds were in a frenzy to see one of their own earn his place on the winner’s podium.
